It is the closest thing we have to a pure measure of fluid intelligence - the ability to reason about novel patterns without relying on language, cultural knowledge, or prior education. Here is why it works and what it actually measures.

How the Test Works

Each item presents a 3ร—3 matrix of geometric figures with one cell missing. The task is to identify the pattern governing the matrix and select the correct missing piece from eight options. The patterns become progressively more complex - from simple shape repetition in early items to multi-rule combinations of rotation, reflection, color change, and numerical progression in later items.

Why It's Culture-Fair

Conventional IQ tests use vocabulary, reading comprehension, and general knowledge - all of which advantage people from educational and cultural backgrounds that emphasized those specific skills. Raven's Matrices require only the ability to identify abstract patterns, which does not depend on language, educational exposure, or cultural familiarity. It can be administered without verbal instructions, making it valid across languages and literacies.

Cross-cultural validity: Raven's Matrices show more consistent results across cultural groups than any other widely used intelligence measure. The score gap between high and low-resource populations is smaller on Raven's than on verbal IQ tests - suggesting it is getting closer to measuring raw reasoning capacity rather than accumulated knowledge.

What the Scores Predict
