Pattern recognition is the foundation of fluid intelligence (Gf) — the ability to reason about novel problems. Raven's Progressive Matrices, the gold-standard non-verbal IQ measure, is based on this exact paradigm. It's culture-fair and doesn't depend on language or prior knowledge.

Our Pattern Recognition test is directly inspired by Raven's Progressive Matrices — the gold standard measure of fluid intelligence (Gf). John Raven developed the test in 1936 specifically to measure the "eduction of relations" — the ability to extract rules from observed patterns and apply them to novel instances. It is deliberately non-verbal and culture-fair, making it one of the best measures of raw reasoning capacity independent of educational background or language.
Fluid intelligence is what allows you to solve problems you have never seen before. It is distinct from crystallized intelligence — the accumulated knowledge and skills from experience — which is measured by tests like vocabulary or general knowledge. Gf peaks in the mid-20s and declines with age, while crystallized intelligence tends to grow through adulthood. Pattern recognition tasks are the purest measure of Gf available in a browser-based format.
Each 3×3 matrix embeds one or more rules: the shapes might rotate, change color, increase in number, or follow an alternating sequence. Early questions test simple rule detection; later questions require integrating two or three rules simultaneously. This increasing abstraction demands the kind of systematic, relational thinking that predicts performance in mathematics, engineering, programming, and scientific reasoning.
Scores of 16+/20 place you in the top quartile of performance. Compare with Mini IQ Test (which mixes verbal, numerical, and spatial reasoning) and Cognitive Reflection Test (which measures System 2 thinking specifically) for a rounded picture of your reasoning profile.
